FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
HOW MUCH DO PIANO LESSONS COST?
A piano lesson with me is $50 an hour and $35 for 30 minutes. I teach at my home studio in Montréal and I also offer online music lessons.
AT WHAT AGE SHOULD I BEGIN PIANO LESSONS?
Piano lessons can start when the student has learned their alphabet and can count up to 10. They should have enough cognition to recognize opposites such as "up vs down", "high vs low", "left vs right", "loud vs soft", etc. Generally speaking, age 6 is a comfortable age. There is no shame in starting late (I started when I was 10) and any musical exposure is helpful at the early stages.
WHY SHOULD I TAKE PIANO LESSONS?
There are many benefits to learning piano. My personal belief is that piano lessons are an investment to having a good skillset to handle any challenge in life. The actual skill of playing music, in my opinion, is a wonderful bonus. Through piano lessons, what I try to teach is the "process" of becoming a pianist. I believe that this is ultimately how piano lessons can truly have a positive effect on the world.
ARE PIANO LESSONS WORTH IT?
I believe piano lessons are always worth it. Many adults wish they could play, and many wish they had someone was there to teach them discipline as a kid. Time is valuable and being able to navigate through life by playing music is priceless.
WHICH PIANO SHOULD I BUY?
This is a very tricky question as it is situational to each person's goals and budget. Pragmatically speaking, a digital keyboard is perfectly fine to get the student's initial interest without investing too much (I recommend Yamaha). The keys have to be weighted. If the student wishes to pursue a career in music, then a good acoustic piano is definitely required. The sooner this is decided, the better. I recommend Yamaha or Steinway models. For those who are not pursing a musical career and also not interesting in upgrading, then any acoustic upright piano is fine. All pianos, however, must have 88 keys.
